This festive season, we’re sharing the uplifting story of Josh Jones, Choir Leader for Tenovus Cancer Care’s Sing with Us choirs, and how the power of music lights up lives across Wales.
Josh Jones, a former member of Only Boys Aloud and now a choir leader for Tenovus Cancer Care, has a simple but powerful mantra for his choristers:
"I always tell them to leave your troubles at the side of the stage. We’ve only got an hour to practice, and it’s so important to have a laugh, let go of the day, and even be a bit silly while we learn the notes together."
Josh’s passion for community singing began when he traded his childhood dreams of carpentry and rugby for music after a school visit from Only Boys Aloud. That decision led him to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Now, he brings that same passion to the Sing with Us choirs, groups designed to support anyone affected by cancer.
Each year, Tenovus Cancer Care’s Lovelight concerts bring people together for a heart-warming celebration of song, candlelight, and community. From Bridgend to Bangor and Cardiff to Carmarthen, Josh leads his choristers through harmonies that are both festive and poignant.
"The Lovelight concerts are very special to us. They are a chance for choristers to reflect and remember loved ones no longer with them, while being surrounded by family and friends."
At a time of year when joy and nostalgia intertwine, these concerts offer comfort, connection, and hope, reminding us all that even in the toughest times, we can find light in the darkness.
But Sing with Us is about more than music. It’s about laughter, friendship, and the joy of being together. Strong bonds form beyond rehearsals, with choristers sharing their homes and Christmas dinners. Each community choir has its own personality, its own sparkle, and its own way of spreading hope during the holidays.
Josh’s humor and warmth create a safe space where everyone feels special and supported:
"Being a Sing with Us choir leader isn’t a job to me. It’s something I do and love. Whenever I’ve had a rubbish day, the choristers lift me up."
Singing is a gift that gives back. Studies show it reduces anxiety and boosts well-being, and for those affected by cancer, the comfort of a choir can be life-changing. The Sing with Us choirs welcome everyone, no matter their singing ability. All that matters is showing up, sharing your heart, and finding joy in each note.
As Josh says:
"Sing better, sing brighter, and have a laugh while doing it."
