Katherine's Story

A few years ago, Katherine McIsaac’s Christmas was overshadowed by her heart condition and impending major surgery. Thanks to lifesaving research and an incredible medical team, Katherine is now fit and well. This is her story.

Diagnosis and Shock

“My heart journey started in January 2015 when I had the flu and an erratic heartbeat. My GP found a loud murmur, and a cardiologist diagnosed me with a bicuspid aortic valve. It felt like a bombshell.

"Over three years, my condition worsened from mild to severe stenosis. By September 2019, I was symptomatic—fatigued, dizzy, and short of breath. Then, Covid hit, and my six-monthly checks were cancelled. In August 2020, I finally got the letter saying I needed surgery.

Delays and Grief

"I was scheduled for surgery in November 2020, but my father passed away. My surgeon delayed the operation until after the funeral. However, another lockdown cancelled cardiac care again. That Christmas was stressful and uncertain. We made the best of it, and I remembered my Dad.

"On 26th January 2021, I had severe chest pain and was rushed to the hospital. My valve was critical. A week later, I had open-heart surgery to fit a mechanical valve. Saying goodbye at the hospital door was heartbreaking, not knowing if I’d see my husband again.

Recovery and Gratitude

"I woke up in ICU, relieved. Recovery went well, and by the following Christmas, I was walking 6 miles a day and cycling. I needed no presents—I already had everything I wanted. I’m grateful for my surgeon’s skill and Heart Research UK for funding the research that saved me.

"Now, 20 months post-surgery, I’m fitter than ever and look forward to Christmas. Each year is a gift I’ll never take for granted. By playing the Make a Smile lottery for Heart Research UK, you’re giving the gift of hope and making stories like mine possible. Thank you!"
